For thus says the One who is high and lifted up, who inhabits eternity, whose name is Holy: “I dwell in the high and holy place, and also with him who is of a contrite and lowly spirit, to revive the spirit of the lowly, and to revive the heart of the contrite.
You inhabit eternity…you are unbounded by all that I see and know. But you inhabit it…you are unchanging, and yet never still. You stretch out the heavens from one end to another, and yet nothing falls outside your loving provision. There is no way to confuse you with your creation, and yet I live and move and have my being in you.
I say the words eternity and infinite and think that I have said something. I convince myself that a word can wrap itself around your being and describe it to me. But am I saying anything at all? Is this just a way of saying I don’t know. Am I simply trying to contain my God?
Or does it remind me to bow my knee…not to attempt to own truth, but to be owned by it? Yes, that is what is happening. You are incomprehensible, but not to speak of you would be to have truly nothing to say. So I will speak of my incomprehensible Father who sent his incomprehensible Son and gave Him up for us all. I will speak of an incomprehensible Spirit that gives life wherever he desires. I will speak of a God who fits no description, and yet must be praised.
Before you every mouth will be stopped and yet I dare not keep silent.
Who are you, Lord? You are incomprehensible and yet you reveal yourself truly. No language can scratch the surface, and yet you make yourself known. You are hidden from my sight, and yet visible in all you do.
You dwell in the high and holy place, and also with him who is of a contrite and lowly spirit. Nothing escapes your attention and nothing falls outside your provision. You are most honored and dwell with the dishonored.
You will dwell among your people and be their light. You are beyond description. You are incomprehensible. Let me find myself in you.
