Is God With Us?
Here in chapter 17, God is put to the test…both by his people and his enemies. God tests his people to show them grace. Israel tests God because they do not believe he is telling them the truth in light of their present circumstances. They test God hoping that he will change…thinking that he needs to change. There is a reason Exodus 17 comes up in the story of Jesus. Jesus believed God. This same Jesus overcame at the precise point Israel failed to believe…at the precise point we have all failed to believe. Jesus believed that God WAS with him…and so he overcame at exactly the point we have been overcome. He who knew no sin became sin for us so that we might become the righteousness of God. Our salvation is not in some truth out there that may come and go, but in the person of Jesus--God with us--who has come near and promised never to cast us out (and he means every word).
