The Astonishing Rock

Sermon on the Mount

The people of Jesus’ day were used to teachers talking about God’s Word…that wasn’t unusual. They were used to famous teachers who knew the Bible and theology and tradition backward and forward. They even had heard prophets come through and say this is what the Lord says… it had only been a hot minute since boat loads of people had been listening to John the Baptist out at the Jordan River. What they weren’t used to is someone coming along and saying “you have heard it said…you shall not murder…but I say to you. They would not have expected to hear what Jesus said a couple verses earlier in vv.21–23…God is my Father…if you want to enter the Kingdom, I have to know you! They would not have been prepared for a teacher to stand before them and say…you will stand or fall based on how you respond to my words. No one really understands who Jesus is without doing what He says…we stand on Him alone!
