When All Is Said and Done

Steadfast Love (Exodus 32-40)

This story of Exodus tells us who God is…it reveals to us his perfect standard…it tells us about his grace…it announces his steadfast love and mercy in the face of sin…his sovereignty over all he has made…and it declares to us his unchanging purpose…but it ends on a cliffhanger. Yes, we are to go on and see what he does next in the book of Leviticus…but even still, this story of Exodus gets us to admit that there is yet more—it coaxes us along to desire real and permanent fulfillment of God’s plan and purpose. It allures us beyond Egypt and Mt. Sinai and the wilderness to an inheritance that cannot be stolen away. It entices us beyond hunger and thirst to endless satisfaction. It reveals to us the enormity of the problem between us and God, and then leaves us longing for its complete and eternal resolution.
